Understanding GA4 Roll-Up Properties: Aggregating Data Across Multiple Properties

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) Roll-Up Properties offer a powerful solution for businesses managing multiple websites or apps. This feature, available exclusively to GA 360 users, allows for the aggregation of data from multiple source properties into a single, comprehensive view.

What are GA4 Roll-Up Properties?

Roll-Up Properties are special GA4 properties that inherit event data from other GA4 properties, known as source properties. They provide a consolidated view of data across multiple websites, subdomains, brands, or regions, depending on how your properties are structured.

Key Benefits of Using Roll-Up Properties

  1. Comprehensive data aggregation: Automatically combine data from multiple source properties into a single dataset.

  2. Holistic performance view: Easily measure overall performance across websites/apps without manual data export and aggregation.

  3. De-duplication of users: Roll-Up Properties de-duplicate users from source properties when they share the same reporting identity.

  4. Cross-property comparisons: Compare data between source properties while also allowing for comparisons to the overall consolidated data.

Setting Up a GA4 Roll-Up Property

  1. Navigate to the admin section of your GA360 property.

  2. Click on "+ Create Property" and select "Roll-up Property."

  3. Name your property, select timezone and currency.

  4. Choose source properties (up to 50 GA360 properties can be selected).

  5. Configure the property settings as needed.

Working with Roll-Up Properties

Roll-Up Properties function similarly to standard GA4 properties. You can:

  • Add or remove users

  • Mark events as conversions

  • Create custom dimensions and metrics

  • Build audiences

  • Link to Google Ads

  • Manage data deletion3

Important Considerations

  1. Cost implications: Events in Roll-Up Properties are billable at half the cost of events in source properties.

  2. Data availability: Historical data is not backfilled; data is only available from the point of Roll-Up Property creation.

  3. Limited integrations: Currently, only Google Ads integration is supported for Roll-Up Properties4.

  4. Custom configurations: Custom dimensions, metrics, and Google Signals are not automatically inherited and must be set up separately in the Roll-Up Property.

Use Cases for Roll-Up Properties

  • Multi-brand companies wanting to view aggregate performance across all brands

  • Organizations with multiple websites or apps seeking a unified view of user behavior

  • Businesses looking to analyze cross-domain user journeys more effectively

Limitations and Challenges

  • Maximum of 50 source properties per Roll-Up Property

  • Cannot act as a source for another Roll-Up Property

  • Limited to GA360 customers only

  • Some features like Data Import are not available at the Roll-Up Property level

By leveraging GA4 Roll-Up Properties, businesses can gain a more comprehensive understanding of their digital presence across multiple properties. This consolidated view enables more informed decision-making and a holistic approach to digital analytics strategy.
